Life brought together Deepa and Jay Lakhani through the bond of marriage. Soon after, another partnership was forged from this union of two designers and lovers of handcrafted luxury. They co-created the luxury accessories brand Deepa Gurnani.
An alumnus of London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, Deepa started in the industry by beading couture pieces for Alexander McQueen, Emanuel Ungaro, Fendi and Marjan Pejoski. Working closely with these design leaders not only enabled Deepa to understand couture standards of quality and finish, but also compelled her to experiment with new and unusual beading and embroidery techniques. She combined this design experience with her distinct style and sensibility to co-create the brand, Deepa Gurnani.
Jay Lakhani, a Jewelry Designer, studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and progressed to work with some of the biggest names in the Fine Jewelry industry. He trained under the head designers of Tiffany and Bvlgari, refining his eye for detail and luxury. In addition to his love of Fine Jewelry, Jay was always drawn to fashion. He noticed a trend for black and basic-silhouettes in the marketplace, which to him were blank canvasses to showcase exquisite embroidered accessories. He dreamed of one day combining the finesse of Fine Jewelry with the experimental nature of Fashion Accessories, to create easy-to-wear works of art.
In what was a culmination of both their dreams and passions, the designer duo launched their label “Deepa Gurnani” in 2006. They combined their skills and a unique take on style to create a line of exclusive hand embroidered accessories, which continues to amaze and inspire fans season after season. Their first line was launched at Henri Bendel’s, NYC in November 2006 and subsequently began selling at various stores across the globe. Being in business for over 10 years now, the brand continues to grow from strength to strength in this constantly changing industry.
Exquisite craftsmanship and luxury is always in demand, however, in a challenging world economy, there is a growing need to cater to the more price-conscious consumer. In 2016, Deepa Gurnani diversified into two separate labels to cater to the different needs of our global customers. Deepa Gurnani remains a luxury brand, focused on limited edition trend-led capsule collections made with Swarovski crystals and semi-precious stones. The label Deepa by Deepa Gurnani is a fun and accessible collection that includes easy-to-wear pieces for all occasions.
The year 2016 also marked Deepa Gurnani’s exclusive collaboration with Designer and Artist, Erté. The collection born of this fabulous creative partnership consists of styles inspired by Erté’s delicate and glamorous art deco look.
